This is not a popular book, but its a very highly regarded book. This guide is among the best. It was simply nice to see some solid advice laid out in an organized manner, backed up by some really cool short stories. Please create a new list with a new name; move some items to a new or existing list; or delete some items. This neon-green book is large, inviting, and unintimidating, loaded with incredible examples, exercises, and advice that will forever impact my writing and approach. Are you a writer?

The Making of a Story is a fresh and inspiring guide to the basics of creative writing—both fiction and creative nonfiction. I had heard of “show and not tell” approach but Alice LaPlante has clarified the correct approach beyond doubt.

A writer should therefore not give up on a rough first draft, but simply plough through to completion.

Unfortunately that’s not me. What makes LaPlante’s book such a great resource? Citations are based on reference standards. She follows with writing exercises, some of which I tried during the a,ice few months, but many I didn’t have time to do while taking classes.
